Heritage - The Bishop's Palace
The Bishop's Palace
Today the Bishop’s Palace is a neglected medieval wall, which was once part of a much grander complex. Hidden away in the centre of Halling, the Palace is located uninvitingly amongst trees and shrubs. Consequently it is overlooked by many.
The Bishop’s Palace was built in 1077 as a residence for the Bishops of Rochester. In the 16th Century the Bishopric fell into difficulties and was leased Dallison family, in whose hands it remained until the 19th Century. During this period the Palace had started to fall into decline and was being used as a farm until the creation of a cement works and the railway that served it. Today, the remains of the railway can be seen cheek-by-jowl with the medieval Palace walls.
Valley of Visions is undertaking restorative work on the Palace walls and the railway embankment to preserve them for future generations. At the same time we aim to create a site that is a valued open space for the residents of Halling and visitors alike.
Over the next three years there will be plenty of opportunities to get involved with this exciting project. Watch this space for events and updates or join our mailing list to receive regular updates.
